The iPhone can be used to pay in at least two cases – when purchasing applications and games from the App Store, and when paying directly with the device itself through terminals (Apple Pay). Both the first and the second involve a default payment method, which can be changed if necessary. Below we will tell you how to do this.

Payment in the App Store

The issue of buying apps, games, as well as subscribing to them and various services in the iOS environment is very relevant, and therefore first we will look at how to change the payment method used for these purposes.

App Store

One of the two possible solutions to our task today in relation to Apple’s branded app store is done through the profile settings available in it.

Open the App Store and under the “Today” tab, tap on your profile image and then on it again, but in the “Account” section that opens. Confirm the transition with Touch ID or Face ID.
Go to the App Store account settings on your iPhone

Next, tap “Manage payment methods. If the additional one you want to replace the primary one is not already tied to your Apple ID, open “Add a payment method” and go to the next step.
Adding a new payment method to the App Store on iPhone

If you have more than one card (account) tied to your account, and just want to change one to another (primary to secondary), tap “Change” in the upper right corner, then use the horizontal bars to the right to change the order of cards (accounts) and click “Done”.

Once you’re on the page for adding a new method, select one of the three options available:

  • Found in Wallet;
  • Credit or debit card;
  • Cell phone.

In the example below, it is the second option that will be considered, since the first consists only of clicking on the card already linked to an Apple ID but not added to the App Store, and the third – of specifying a mobile number and confirming it by entering a code from the SMS.

Enter the card details: its number, expiration date, secret code, and check if the name and surname you specified earlier (when registering your account) are correct or, if necessary, specify them. Fill in the mandatory fields of the “Billing address” block, and then click “Done”.

Important!
The bank card you will be using as the primary method of payment on the App Store must be issued in the same country as the account was registered to. The address, such as zip code, must also match it.

Wait for the transaction to complete and review the result. Additionally, the new payment method can be added to the Wallet app, allowing it to be used with Apple Pay. But we will tell you more about this in the next part of the article.

Tip: If you need to change the priority of payment methods in the app store in the future, i.e. make the second card or account (provided that one is linked) the main one, just change their order by following the steps described in the second paragraph of the second paragraph of this instruction.

Settings

It is possible to change the method of payment in the App Store without having to launch it. The same actions as discussed above can be done in the iOS settings.

Open “Settings” on your iPhone and go to the first of the available sections – Apple ID management.

Next, open the “Payment and Shipping” subsection. If necessary, confirm the move to it with Touch ID or Face ID.

The next steps are the same as the previous method:
If you already have more than one card or account linked to your account and just want to change their order (priority), do so as shown in the image below.

If the task is specifically to add a new payment method, repeat steps #3-5 from the previous part of this article.

Adding a new and/or modifying an existing payment method in the App Store is a fairly straightforward procedure. The only, but still very important, nuance is that the bank card and/or mobile number used as an account must match the country to which the Apple ID is registered.

Payment with Apple Pay

Apple Pay is known to allow you to use your iPhone instead of a bank card to pay at terminals. If necessary, you can link a new card to the service and replace the old one with it, or, if there are already more than one linked to an account, quickly switch between them, but first things first.

Wallet app

Apple Pay is made possible by the integrated NFC module in the iPhone and the Wallet app. The easiest way to change the payment method is with the latter.

Open the Wallet app and tap the round button with a plus sign in the upper right corner.

In the window that appears, click the “Continue” button.
If you already have a card (other than the one you currently use to pay with Apple Pay) linked to your Apple ID, the next screen will allow you to select it. To do this, simply enter your security code (CVC), and then click the now-active “Next” button in the upper-right corner.

If the goal is to “Add another card,” tap the appropriate caption. Next, you can take one of two paths:
Place the card in the frame that will appear in the interface of the opened Wallet app, wait until the data indicated on it will be recognized, read it and confirm. In addition, you will need to manually enter the security code and, if the card is not named, the last name and first name of the owner.

“Enter card details manually”. In this case you should indicate the number of the card and press “Next”, then enter the expiry date and security code, afterwards “Next”, accept “Terms and Conditions”, choose the method of verification (SMS to number or call), then press again “Next” and confirm the procedure by indicating the code received in the message or dictated by the call.

After tapping “Next” one last time and waiting a few more seconds, you will see that the card has been added to your Wallet and has been activated.

The last thing to do is to click on the “Use Default” button that appears on the screen, which will assign the new card as your primary method of payment.

Wallet app settings

Most of the applications pre-installed in iOS do not have their own settings, or rather, they are displayed in the section of the operating system with the same name. It is from there that you can add and then change the payment method used in Apple Pay.

Open the “Settings” of your iPhone, scroll down and go to the “Wallet and Apple Pay” section.

Tap on “Add Card.”

In the next window, click on “Continue” and then follow the steps described in step #3 of the previous method.

Following the instructions above, you can add all of your payment cards (including virtual cards) to the Wallet app if the bank where they were issued supports Apple Pay, if necessary. How to switch between the payment methods added to the virtual wallet and designate any of them as the main payment method, we will tell you in the last part of the article.

Switching between payment methods

If you have more than one bank card tied up in the Wallet app, and therefore Apple Pay, and you occasionally need to switch between them, proceed as follows, depending on the situation:
In the Wallet app.
If you want to change the card to be used as your primary method of payment, launch the app, tap the “looking out” card at the bottom with your finger, and without releasing it, pull it up until all the cards appear. Tap the one you want to make the main one and place it “in the foreground”. Accept that it will be the default by tapping “OK” on the pop-up window.

When paying through Apple Pay
If, however, you want to change your card before paying directly, you’ll need to proceed a little differently. Call Apple Pay from the locked smartphone screen (double tap the home button on older iPhones or double tap the lock button on newer ones), tap the card below, and then select the one you want to use for payment from the list that unfolds.

Now you know how to change the payment method on your iPhone in the App Store and Wallet app used for Apple Pay. Usually, there are no problems during this procedure.
